Ex-president Roh will be remembered among South Koreans as a person who had devoted his earnest life for the true democratization of South Korea. He was a bold fighter against military regimes in 1970s and 1980s, who then turned into a 'naive' politician trying to get over deeply rooted regionalism that has been subject to political manipulation ever since the military coup in 1962.

South Korean people used to call this 'naive' politician "babo", a fool who doesn't know, or rather, wouldn't practice Machivellian tactics in the formidable political environment. People loved this freshness in him, and he could become president, beyond anyone's expectation, in 2003 mainly because of this image of innocence.

During the presidential term, he tried his best to get rid of authoritarian practices in the government. During the 5 years, president Roh nobly resisted any temptation to abuse power that he could have mobilized. His neo-liberal economic policy, however, did not satisfy many ordinary people and non-haves that used to be the political pillar of his party. Not a few people started to fancy the older authoritarian regimes that had guaranteed some 'rice', due to rapid economic growth in that period, rather than liberty or human dignity.

It became on-ly apparent after the inauguration of current president Lee Myung Bak that what Roh had achieved for political democracy may not be taken for granted any longer. As an internet user who criticized government policy was arrested quite recently, unimaginable in former democratic governments, Korean people began to realize that Roh's government was actually more competent than the criticizers, including some status quo news media, had propagated.

Recent investigation came out from this political background; and few people in Korea believe that the corruption charge against the ex-president was carried out by a pure investigative process. Prosecutors are believed to have deliberately leaked information to dishonour the former political rival, because Roh maintained uncorruptable image that was politically burdensome to the current authoritarian government. Although the prosecutors are now saying that some major newspapers spread arbitrary news reports maliciously attacking the former reformist, apart from their work.

Whatever is the truth, this opaque way of governmental functioning does not get rid of the fear of the former Soviet's political scheme. Koreans have been proud of their new democratic identity that would be different from some other authoritarian neighbours; but now may have to wonder whether this political scapegoating may not forebode the collapse of a Weimar Republic in 21st century East Asia.
